J. Mackie, Ltd. acquires exclusive Santa Fe artist collection Ali Launer Designs blends sophisticated forms featuring precious beads and bone
Dallas-based J. Mackie, Ltd.', which offers a unique, eclectic blend of fine furnishings and home accents, recently acquired the exclusive representation of Santa Fe artist Ali Launer. Ms. Launer creates extremely intricate designs with colorful semi-precious stones and beads on animal skulls, reminiscent of her adopted home in New Mexico. Until now, Ali Launer Designs could be found only in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the Nussbaumer Fine Art Gallery.
J. Mackie, Ltd. owners Jeff Tyra and Mackie McCauley said the response to Launer's artwork, which includes both tabletop versions and wall decor, has been amazing. "We are fortunate to have the exclusive opportunity to show artist Ali Launer, and have had a lot of interest in her work since it was unveiled in January," said McCauley. "These are very exclusive, one-of-a-kind pieces that buyers could only get by going to Santa Fe," he added. The showroom started with about 10 of Launer's pieces but sold 3 in the first 2 weeks.
"I'm very excited to be with J. Mackie," said Launer. "I'm very picky about where my art is shown, but I thought if I could find the right showroom, I would bring it to the Dallas Market Center. Jeff (Tyra) and I have a mutual friend, and with their mix of minerals and eclectic accessories, it seemed like a perfect fit."
The combination of luxurious and sensationally colored stones on the basic form of animals is impressive to view. Few artists are creating anything remotely like Ms. Launer's art, with its fabulous combination of beautifully arranged patterns and extraordinary bold presence. Her selection is powerful and dominant yet regal animals such as the bull, ram or buffalo serve as the perfect frame for her bold designs. Each animal provides unique looks and opportunities, some being more ornate while others have straight, angular lines. Each intricate piece can take anywhere from 20 to 80 hours to complete.
"For whatever reason, beads are my form of artful expression," said Launer from her studio in Santa Fe, NM. She started working with beads when she was twelve years old in her hometown of Pittsford, New York. She attended Newbury College as an interior design major which inspired her passion for color and the use of texture in her beadwork. Moving to Santa Fe when she was 22, she began making beaded hatbands for a custom hat gallery and eventually stringing jewelry for an international jewelry company.
Her passion is now the beaded animal skulls. "It's more exciting than jewelry and allows me to be completely creative in my own way," she said. "I wouldn't trade this gift away for the world."
